Per què ningú més utilitza el cavall com a mitjà de transport a les ciutats? No obstant això, els cavalls, com qualsevol altre animal, eren susceptibles a les malalties, la fatiga (sovint els mataven els mateixos conductors de tramvies i els deixaven tirats al carrer fins a podrir-se) i va haver de rebre diverses cures veterinàries, refugi i aliment. Però aquestes no van ser les principals preocupacions dels propietaris de cavalls, de l’empresa de Omnibus, i els passatgers i de la societat en general. La principal preocupació amb els cavalls era la contaminació.
El fem generat pels cavalls era de proporcions inimaginables. Els centres de les ciutats nord-americanes eren un embornal obert, amb carrers que estaven literalment cobertes de fem. A la fi del segle XIX, en terres ermes a Nova York, que tenia una població d’aproximadament 160 000 cavalls per cada 2 milions de persones, van arribar a acumular entre 10 i 15 metres d’altura de fem provinents dels carrers. Al costat d’això, les mosques, l’orina, i la crueltat amb els animals eren una constant.
No obstant això, els serveis de transport eren ostatges de cavalls. Fins i tot amb la invenció de la màquina de vapor i la ràpida expansió dels ferrocarrils portats per la revolució industrial, el cavall també era essencial per a les ciutats. Aquesta situació va començar a canviar amb la millora dels motors de combustió interna i amb la invenció de l’automòbil.
